The FIFA World Cup 2022 will kick off on Sunday, November 20 with hosts Qatar playing Ecuador. The World Cup in Qatar is over 10 years in the making. It has been a controversial journey to get to this point.
Qatar has eight shiny stadiums ready for international football. The country is ready to show off and it is a chance for Qatar to announce itself to the entire world.
Thirty-two teams will arrive in Qatar in November. Each team will hope to return home in December with the FIFA World Cup trophy.
Unfortunately, 31 teams will leave Qatar without silverware. Only one team will be the world champions. The group stage is set and the biggest party in the world is nearly ready to begin.
The Qatar World Cup will begin on Sunday, November 20 a Lusail Stadium. The first match of the tournament will see the host team, Qatar, play Ecuador.
The Qatar World Cup will kick off on Sunday, November 20. The four-week tournament will finish on Sunday, December 18.
Due to the major leagues in Europe being interrupted for the FIFA World Cup fixtures, the tournament will be played during a short break in the football calendar. The 2022 World Cup is the first-ever edition of the competition played during the winter in the northern hemisphere.
The 2022 World Cup stadiums are a major talking point for this year’s tournament. The country of Qatar is relatively small and the tournament’s eight stadiums will be nearby.
Eight stadiums will host matches in Qatar. The stadiums are within a 21-mile radius of Doha’s city centre. The teams will be based in the capital.
Fans can travel to the stadiums easily. However, compared to previous World Cup tournaments, there will be fewer fans present. Qatar’s lack of hotels and accommodations will prevent many people from visiting the country during the tournament.
The stadiums are innovative and could inspire more new venues around the globe. Fans will have an experience at each arena that is unlike any other at this year’s tournament.
Most of the stadiums will be connected by a metro system. Fans can travel between stadiums and different points in the city. However, some stadiums will be slightly more difficult to reach. The metro system won’t service all of the country’s football venues.
The eight 2022 FIFA World Cup stadiums are:
The World Cup in Qatar is the biggest sporting event of 2022. Sportsbooks have a variety of markets available for punters, but the most widely bet on market is the World Cup winner odds. The group stage will see the 32 teams split into eight groups of four teams each. Here is a look at the latest betting odds for the World Cup winner market.
Brazil are the favourite to win the Qatar World Cup. The Selecao are in a very winnable group with Serbia, Switzerland, and Cameroon. Group G should see Brazil top it, but the Brazilians would be at the mercy of the draw for the round of 16.
Manager Tite arguably has the best squad in the world right now. However, there are always problems with Brazil at the World Cup. Since last winning the competition in 2002, the Selecao failed to reach the final round of the tournament.
Brazil’s last World Cup win was in South Korea in 2002. The South Korean tournament is similar to this year’s event as it started at a different time compared previous editions. It ran from May 31 to June 30 to finish before the rainy season in east Asia.
Many of the players competing in Europe went straight to the World Cup following gruelling seasons. The tournament kicks off in November, which could give Brazil the upper hand once more.
England are another favourite to win the World Cup and are just behind Brazil in odds. The Premier League will take a hiatus from its gruelling schedule to give national team players the chance to win the biggest prize in international football.
A key factor could help Gareth Southgate’s men win the World Cup. The Premier League does not take a winter break during the season. Premier League players are often said to be tired by the time an international tournament starts. Playing in the middle of the Premier League season could benefit the English. Could the Three Lions reach Lusail Stadium and the final day of the World Cup in Qatar?
Germany are one of the dark horses a this year’s tournament. Coach Hansi Flick leads Germany into the World Cup 2022 after Joachim Lowe left following the Euro 2021 campaign.
Flick has a star-studded team at his disposal. However, Germany are not the same team that won the 2014 edition of the tournament. Flick still has some of the world’s top players.
Germany’s ability to go deep in the tournament could depend on Bayern Munich’s form when the tournament starts. A large number of Germany’s players come from the Bavarians.
Portugal and Argentina will both have plenty of supporters. Cristiano Ronaldo will have one last crack at winning a World Cup. The forward isn’t a regular for Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United this season. Portugal’s play may depend on Ronaldo’s form.
Lionel Messi finally won the Copa America in 2021. Now, the Argentine is aiming for the World Cup 2022. Messi will have a strong group of players around him. Argentina reached the final of the 2014 tournament but lost 1-0 to Germany.
The Argentina group is very winnable. Saudi Arabia, Poland, and Mexico make up Group C. Argentina should get out of the group and raise hopes they can win the tournament back home.
The World Cup 2022 is the first-ever winter edition of the tournament. Due to the scheduling of this year’s competition, an unlikely long shot could win it.
Several long shots could play well and make a deep run at the trophy. The USA are 100/1 odds to win the tournament. Since reaching the quarterfinals of the 2002 tournament, the Yanks have not fared as well.
Senegal have the best sportsbook odds of the African nations competing at the World Cup. The Senegalese are 66/1 to win it. What about hosts Qatar? The Qataris are 350/1 to win the tournament. Group A features Qatar, Senegal, the Netherlands, and Ecuador. The Qataris start the tournament versus Ecuador, which is a match the host team could struggle to win.
Denmark reached the semifinals of the Euro 2021 tournament. An England penalty sent the Danes crashing out of the competition. Denmark will play in Group D with reigning world champions France, Australia, and Tunisia. The Danes should be difficult to play.
Group A features Qatar, the Netherlands, Ecuador, and Senegal. The Qataris will play Ecuador in the opening game on November 20. The opening game was moved forward a day to allow Qatar to play as it is a tradition that the host nation plays the tournament’s first match. Each team will play three group stage matches with the best two teams moving on to the knockout matches.
The Netherlands are favourite to win the group at odds of 2/5. Senegal are at odds of 9/2, while Senegal are 6/1. Bookies’ odds of Qatar winning the group are 14/1.
Group A World Cup fixtures will be:
Group B is one of the most exciting groups at the World Cup. The group features England, Iran, Wales, and the USA. Sportsbooks are backing England to win Group B at odds of 1/3. The USA are 11/2 to win the group and Wales are 6/1. Iran are 16/1 to win Group B.
England and the USA famously met at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The match finished after Rob Green allowed Clint Dempsey’s shot to go through his arms. Gareth Southgate’s men won’t have it easy in Group B. This will be a competitive group.
Group B World Cup fixtures will be:
Group C will see Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, and Poland battle for progression to the last 16. Argentina are the sportsbooks’ favourite to win the group. The battle for second place could be wide open with three competitive teams.
Argentina are at odds of 2/5 to win the group. Poland are 9/2 to finish first in Group C and Mexico are 5/1. Saudi Arabia are a long shot to win the group at 20/1.
Group C World Cup fixtures will be:
Group D has the reigning champions France. The French will attempt to win a second straight World Cup tournament.
Only two teams have won back-to-back editions of the cup tournament. Italy won the 1934 and 1938 cups. Twenty years later, Brazil won the 1958 and 1962 editions of the competition. The World Cup was different back then. It is now arguably more difficult to win the competition.
In 1986, Argentina defeated Germany to win the tournament in Mexico. Four years later, the teams met in the final at Italia ’90. Germany ended Argentina’s bid for a second straight cup win. The odds are against Frane retaining the trophy.
France are 2/5 to win Group D. Denmark are 3/1 to win it, while Australia are 10/1. A Tunisia group is at the odds of 14/1.
Group A World Cup fixtures will be:
Two of international football’s heavyweights will meet in Group E. Spain and Germany are the headline teams in the group. They will play Costa Rica from CONCACAF and Japan from the AFC.
Sportsbooks expect Spain and Germany to emerge from Group E. However, Costa Rica and Japan have played well in recent editions of the tournament. Both international teams will believe they can reach the knockout stage.
Spain are favourite to win the group at odds of 5/6. Germany are 6/5 to top Group E. A Japan group win is at 10/1 odds and a Costa Rica first-place finish is at 33/1.
Group E World Cup fixtures will be:
Belgium, Morocco, Canada, and Croatia will play in Group G. Croatia reached the World Cup final in 2018, but lost to France 4-2.
This won’t be an easy group for Croatia. Group F will be competitive with Belgium as the favourite to win the group. Canada are making their second-ever World Cup appearance. The Canadians last played at the World Cup in 1986. Canada lost all three matches, scored zero goals, and conceded five times.
Group F World Cup fixtures will be:
Tournament favourite Brazil are in Group G. It isn’t a straightforward group, and there are plenty of opportunities for Brazil to drop points. Cameroon, Switzerland, and Serbia are also in Group G.
Brazil’s schedule of friendlies is often called into question when the World Cup comes around. While they should reach the knockout games, Brazil may not go much further.
Bookies’ best betting odds on Brazil winning the group are at 4/9. Switzerland are at odds of 9/2, while Serbia are at 11/2. Cameroon have the best betting odds of 12/1 to win Group G.
Group G World Cup fixtures will be:
The final group will feature Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal. The Portuguese will be joined by South Korea, Uruguay, and Ghana.
The Portuguese are heavy favourites to win the group at odds of 4/6. However, their attempts to win the group will be dictated by Ronaldo. He isn’t in Erik ten Hag’s plans at Manchester United and comes off the bench at the moment.
South Korea have the longest odds to win the group at 11/1. Uruguay are 2/1 to top Group H, while Ghana are 11/1 to win it.
The round of 16 will kick off on Saturday, December 3. The round of 16 will finish on Tuesday, December 6, with the final match of the stage.
The round of 16 fixtures will be:
The 2022 World Cup quarterfinals will begin on Friday, December 9. Teams will play in the quarterfinals over two days. The stage will end on Saturday, December 10 with four teams advancing to the semifinals.
The quarterfinal fixtures will be:
The semifinals will begin on Tuesday, December 13, in the Lusail Iconic Stadium. The following day, Wednesday, December 14, the second semifinal will be played. The second semifinal is at Al Bayt Stadium.
The semifinal fixtures will be:
The third-place playoff will be three days after the semifinals. The third-place playoff is on Saturday, December 17.
The third-place playoff is at Khalifa International Stadium.
The World Cup Final is on Sunday, December 18. The final round will be at the Lusail Iconic Stadium.
The Lusail Iconic Stadium is the largest for this year’s event. The stadium holds 80,000 fans and is located around 15 kilometres from Doha city centre.
After the tournament finishes, many of the seats inside the Lusail Iconic Stadium will be removed and transported to developing countries. The seats will be used in stadiums in those countries.
The opening match between Qatar and Ecuador, a semifinal, and the final match will be played at the Lusail Iconic Stadium.
The final will end the four-week tournament. Following the final, many of the players at the World Cup will return to their club teams to resume the domestic season.
The final will feature the two best teams in the competition. Record winners Brazil are aiming to reach the final. However, the 2018 winners France will fancy their chances of repeating as champions.
The FIFA World Cup 2022 will attract the world’s best players and international teams. All eyes in the football world will be on Qatar for the tournament in November and December. It is the first time the FIFA tournament will be held in winter. Could a first-time winner lift the trophy?
Only eight national teams have won the tournament’s trophy previously. The teams that have won it include:
