The Reserve Bank on Thursday raised the Additional Factor of Authentication (AFA) limit from Rs 5,000 to Rs 15,000 per transaction for e-mandates on cards, Prepaid Payment Instruments (PPIs) and UPI for recurring transactions. It implies, additional authentication will not be need for payment of Rs 15,000 per transaction.
“On a review of implementation of the e-mandate framework and the protection available to customers, it has been decided to increase the…AFA limit from Rs 5,000 to Rs 15,000 per transaction,” the Reserve Bank said in a circular. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has, over the past decade, put in place various safety and security measures for card payments, including the requirement of AFA, especially for ‘card-not-present’ transactions. Under e-mandate, an individual can give standing instruction to the bank to debit a specific amount automatically on recurring basis.
Recovery of fuel receipt from the vehicle used in the crime helped the Punjab Police to unveil the trail of events connected with the murder of Punjabi singer Shubhdeep Singh, popularly known as Sidhu Moosewala.
So far 10 accused, including the main conspirator gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, have been arrested in the case, police said. The police have also identified four shooters involved in the crime, an official statement said on Thursday.
Moosewala, who left his house along with two men, was shot dead by some unidentified people on May 29. He was driving his Mahindra Thar vehicle at the time of the incident.
One of the important leads was the recovery of a fuel receipt of the petrol pump based in Fatehabad in Haryana from the Bolero SUV, which was used in the crime and later found abandoned near Khayala village, about 13 km from the spot, the statement said.
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai will be on a visit to New Delhi on Friday, to meet Union Ministers and to take part in a television network’s event. According to the CM’s tour plan shared with the media by his office, he will be leaving for New Delhi from Bengaluru in the morning and will be meeting Union Ministers after reaching the national capital.
After taking part in a television network’s event later in the day, he will be attending the GST meeting through videoconferencing. Bommai will be leaving for Bengaluru from New Delhi in the evening. There is no official confirmation regarding whether he will be meeting BJP’s central leadership during the visit. The CM’s New Delhi visit comes days ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled two-day visit to Karnataka on June 20 and 21.
Four people, including two minors, were killed after a jeep rammed into their motorcycles in Rajasthan’s Udaipur district, police said on Thursday.
Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot took to Twitter to offer his condolences to their family members. The accident occurred near Khokharia ki Naal on Gogunda-Pindwara highway on Wednesday evening when the jeep hit the two motorcycles from behind, Assistant Sub-Inspector at Bekaria police station Sanjay Masar said.
The deceased were identified as Naresh (21), his nephew Bhana Ram (12), Mukesh Dhannaram (22) and his brother-in-law Mukesh Garasiya (16), police said. “Four people died in a road accident on NH 27 in Bakaria area in Udaipur. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family. May God give them strength to bear this loss and may the soul of the departed rest in peace,” Gehlot tweeted. The bodies were handed over to the family members on Thursday after post-mortem, police said.
Taking no chances after the Rajya Sabha poll setback, the ruling Mahi Vikas Aghadi in Maharashtra has asked all its MLAs to gather in Mumbai ahead of the June 20 election to the state Legislative Council. All the MLAs of the alliance partners Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress have been asked to be in the state capital from June 18, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar told reporters in Pune on Thursday. There are 11 candidates — five from the BJP and two each from the three MVA constituents — in the fray for ten vacancies in the Council. On June 10, the BJP won three out of six Rajya Sabha seats from Maharashtra, outwitting the MVA by wooing MLAs of smaller parties and Independents and through clever vote allotment. Talking about the Rajya Sabha setback, Pawar said the BJP’s third candidate, Dhananjay Mahadik, won due to second preference votes.
Gold prices in the national capital rose by Rs 21 to Rs 50,602 per 10 grams on Thursday in line with recovery in global prices, according to HDFC Securities. In the previous trade, the yellow metal settled at Rs 50,581 per 10 grams. Silver also jumped by Rs 37 to Rs 60,525 per kg from Rs 60,488 per kg in the previous trade. In the international market, both gold and silver were trading flat at USD 1,833 per ounce and USD 21.58 per ounce, respectively. “Gold prices traded steady with spot gold prices at COMEX trading at USD 1,833 per ounce on Thursday. Gold prices held strong, supported by weaker dollar and fall in US bond yields,” said Tapan Patel, Senior Analyst (Commodities) at HDFC Securities.
Despite the improvement in asset quality, financial institutions, including banks, need to proactively undertake stress testing of loan books to examine their loss absorption limits and take steps to improve them wherever required, RBI Deputy Governor M Rajeshwar Rao said on Thursday. The gross non-performing assets (GNPAs) and net NPAs of banks improved to 5.97 per cent and 1.7 per cent as of March 31, 2022, from 9.23 per cent and 3.66 per cent as of September 2019, respectively, he said.
Delhi Congress workers on Thursday were faced with water cannon during a march to Lieutenant Governor’s house they held to decry the Delhi Police for “entering the Congress headquarters” and “thrashing” the party leaders inside. The protest march that was led by state president Anil Kumar, was stopped by the police, minutes after it started from Sushrut Trauma Centre near Chandgiram Akhara to the LG’s house. The Congress workers alleged that the police tried to stop them from marching to the LG’s house and resorted to water cannons to throw their protest in disarray.
Mild tension prevailed near Raj Bhavan here on Thursday, after scores of Congress leaders and workers staged a protest against grilling of top party leader Rahul Gandhi by Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money-laundering case pertaining to the National Herald-AJL deal. Police foiled the attempts by the protesters to lay seige to the Raj Bhavan, as part of a “Chalo Raj Bhavan” call given by Congress’ Telangana unit.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Thursday launched the online helicopter booking portal for the Amarnath yatra which is scheduled to start from June 30. “Launched online helicopter booking service portal for Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra. For the first time, devotees can travel with ease directly from Srinagar to Panchtarni and complete the holy yatra in a single day,” LG Sinha tweeted after launching the portal. More than 7,100 coronavirus cases have been reported in Delhi in the last 10 days as doctors and other medical experts cautioned people to not lower the guard and follow all Covid-appropriate behaviour. Amid a spike in daily cases, the positivity rate too has climbed from 1.92 per cent registered on June 7 to 7.01 per cent on June 15, as per official figures. Delhi on Wednesday had recorded 1,375 Covid cases, the highest daily tally in a month, and zero death. On May 10, the city had logged 1,118 cases with a positivity rate of 4.38 per cent, and one death, while on May 8, Delhi had reported 1,422 cases with a positivity rate of 5.34 percent, and zero death. The number of COVID-19 cases have registered a steady rise in the last ten days, as the daily tally mounted to over 1,300 on June 15 from 247 on June 6, totalling 7,175 cases in this period, according to official data shared by the city health department. This corresponds to a rise of about 450 per cent in the daily cases in this period. While on June 14 and 15, the tally had been over 1,000, from June 10-13, it had stood in excess of 600 on all four days.
Stating that “everything should be fair” and authorities should strictly follow due procedure under the law, the Supreme Court on Thursday gave the Uttar Pradesh government and its authorities three days to respond to pleas alleging that houses of those accused in last week’s violence were illegally demolished. There must be a sense among the citizens that rule of law prevails in the country, a vacation bench of Justices A S Bopanna and Vikram Nath said, The bench has posted the matter for further hearing on Tuesday.
Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal (BD) have been denied permission to hold a protest rally against the violence amid protests in many parts of the country over the controversial remarks made on the Prophet. The two outfits had planned a rally on Thursday in the city to register their protest against people who indulge in violence in the pretext of protesting against certain remarks made by BJP leaders against the Prophet. The rally was scheduled to be held near the PVS circle and VHP and BD leaders had announced the decision through social media.

In his opening address at a special meeting of India-ASEAN foreign ministers in Delhi, Jaishankar talked about the “geopolitical headwinds” triggered by the Ukraine crisis and its knock-on effects on food, energy security, prices of fertilisers and commodities as well as logistics and supply chains.
The Mumbai police’s Economic Offences Wing has arrested the chief financial officer (CFO) of an agro company for allegedly duping an investor for Rs 117 crore, an official said on Thursday. The accused, identified as Dhwani Paresh Dattani (28), was apprehended by the EOW officials on Tuesday, he said. She was the CFO of Suumaya Industries, the official said. Dattani was arrested on charges of duping an investor of Rs 117 crore by promising high returns, he said. A probe into the case is on, he added.
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Thursday hit out at the Union government over its new ‘Agnipath scheme’ of recruiting soldiers, terming it “unfair towards rural youth”. As announced, ‘Agnipath’ or ‘Agniveer’ scheme is a process for recruiting soldiers in the Army, Navy and Air force, to be hired for a term of four years on contract. The scheme was announced by Defence minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday.
Maharashtra’s Beed police have registered a case against suspended BJP functionary Nupur Sharma in connection with her alleged derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammad, an official said on Thursday. Sharma is already facing similar cases in Mumbai, Thane and some other places in Maharashtra. An advocate, Sayyed Azim, had complained to the Beed police, alleging that Sharma’s remarks made during a TV debate hurt the religious sentiments of Muslims, the official said.
After leading a life on the run for over two decades, a 42-year-old man, wanted in several criminal cases including two murders, was finally caught in his own village in Odisha’s Ganjam district, police said on Thursday. Acting on a tip-off, police nabbed Sankar Biswal from Tulasipur village in Khallikote Police Station area on Tuesday during one of his visits to meet his family, Superintendent of Police Brijesh Rai said, adding he was working as a daily wage labourer in Kerala. He is accused in at least 13 cases, including two murders in 1998, 10 attempts to murder and one theft case, Rai said.

A special court in Mumbai has convicted a 23-year-old salesman of a sari shop for sexually abusing a minor customer and outraging her modesty while helping her try out a garment, and sentenced him to three years’ rigorous imprisonment. Though the salesman argued that the girl’s mother had falsely implicated him in the case after he refused to offer her a discount in prices of the saris she purchased, Special Judge Anis A J Khan, in the order passed earlier this week, said a mother will not put her minor daughter’s “chastity at stake” just for a price discount.
Australia’s new government on Thursday formally committed to a more ambitious greenhouse gas reduction target of 43 per cent by the end of the decade in fulfillment of a key election pledge. The previous conservative government was dumped by voters at the May 21 election after it stuck to a seven-year-old pledge to reduce Australia’s emissions by only 26 per cent to 28 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030.

The Food and Drug Administration’s vaccine advisers gave a thumbs-up to vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer for the littlest kids. The outside experts voted unanimously that the benefits of the shots outweigh any risks for children under five that is roughly 18 million youngsters. They are the last age group in the US without access to COVID-19 vaccines and many parents have been anxious to protect their little children. If all the regulatory steps are cleared, shots should be available next week.
The CBI on Wednesday quizzed Trinamool Congress MLA Saokat Molla for more than eight hours in connection with its probe into alleged coal theft from the mines of the Eastern Coalfields Ltd in West Bengal, officials said. Molla, the Canning Purba MLA, appeared before the CBI sleuths in the morning and was “questioned in three shifts during his stay” at the central agency’s office here, they said. “He was asked about the coal theft scam and his meeting with influential people at his office where a few monetary deals were finalised,” the CBI official said soon after the interrogation was completed on Wednesday night.
